car rental Bulgaria Burgas is a successor of the Ancient Greek city of Pyrgos (?), founded by colonists from Apolonia as a military and observational post against the other important settlement in the region —mesembria. Besides Pirgos, the present-day city expands over the area of three other ancient settlements: Castrition, Skafida and Rossokastron.

In the Middle Ages, a small fortress called Pirgos (?????? being Greek for "tower") was erected on the place and was most probably used as a watchtower. It was only in the 17th century that a settlement named Ahelo-Pirgas grew in the modern area of the city. It was later renamed to Bourgas and had only about 3,000 inhabitants, most of them Greeks at the time of the Liberation.

In 19th century, with the increasing maritime trade in the Black Sea Burgas became one of the most important port-cities. However, it has lost some of its importance with the shift of the trade between Balkans-Istanbul-Trabzon to Southern port-cities with the construction of Salonica-Istanbul railways. The history museum was founded in 1925 and today the archeological department is housed there with rich collection of finds from the time of the antique Black sea colonizers. Ceramic utensils, objects from the daily round, antique coins, jewelry, tools and models of the ancient settlements are exhibited.
The ethnographic museum contains interesting collection of traditional mummer's masks and the typical for the region costumes, folk objects and ritual attributes. A number of traditional Bulgarian fabrics and embroideries typical of the region are exhibited.
Natural scientific museum contains many exhibits telling about the geological particularities of the land and of the region, of the flora and fauna.
Over 1200 exponents are exhibited , connected with insects and reptiles.
More than 140 fish species, plants from Stradzha region and protected species are presented.
The sea garden in the town is splendid place and vies with the one in Varna. The residents and guests of the town can walk and have a rest in the wonderful nature and sea air. The central beach is located exactly under the Sea garden.
