Surrounded by the mountains Pirin, Rila and the Rhodopes, health resort Bansko is a mountain resort with short summer and long winter. The snowfall is abundant and ensures permanent winter snow cover with thickness up to 2 m. The ski season on the Pirin slopes starts in the middle of December and ends around the middle of May. The mountains are predominantly of alpine character. On their slopes there are ski courses of all categories - from beginners to experienced masters.
Bansko is located at 925m above the sea level, and the ski zone is at 2000 -2600 m. Pirin is with predominant alpine relief and the highest peak is peak Vihren - 2914 m. The ski courses are situated at approximately 10 km above the town on the north slope of Pirin and are easily accessed, about 25 minutes by ski lift, which starts from Bansko. 44 facilities for artificial snow cover the most of the slopes and significantly extend the season. As from this year Bansko offers also 16 km ski route equipped with machines for artificial snow and lighting, connecting the high parts with Bansko.
The excellent quality of total 56 km ski courses is attained through their processing by 12 snow-stamping machines. The slopes of Bansko offer courses with any degree of difficulty, appropriate both for beginners and professionals. 35% of the ski courses are for beginners, 40% for advanced and 25% for experienced skiers.
For the snowboard lovers there is specially build course with different attractions - road-humps, ski-jumps and half-pipes, and for untiring skiers - illuminated courses for night skiing. There are courses and shooting ground for biathlon. For the smallest skiers there is an entertainment ground built with qualified teachers and a game room.

Bansko is rich with its historic sites and cultural monuments. In the surroundings of the town the remnants of antique fortresses and Thracian funeral mounds in the Old ruins can be visited. To the west and northeast from the town there is a great number of archeological finds, and the remnants of late medieval churches "St. Iliya" and "St. George" are located to the southeast. |
